Fate Vs. Free Will

Free Will Vs. Fate or Destiny

When I wake up in the morning, I can decide to get out of bed or roll over and hit the snooze button. That decision will have an effect on the entire course of my day. In fact, each decision I make plays a role in each event and activity in my life. I believe that I am solely responsible for my decisions and that it is my free will that determines my life path. Many argue that fate is responsible even when I make my own decisions however; it is futile to argue either side because it is an unwinnable argument. I believe in the free will of humans and believe that no one can see the future. People that believe in fate and destiny argue that all choices are set and that we are only following predetermined paths. I made the choices of my classes this year and as a result I now have a new set of responsibilities and work that I have to take care of. That statement is supposed to prove that I made a choice that directly impacted my life, but a person that believes in fate would say that I was destined to have those classes and that I was destined to write a blog post about this very subject. As a result of my belief in free will, I also believe in personal responsibility and human brain chemistry. I think that I am responsible for all actions I make and therefore accountable for mishaps and blunders. Although in some situations people’s choices may be affected by their brain chemistry, an example being that if a man is depressed because of low melatonin levels. That man has brain chemistry that caused him to become depressed, but it is his choice to seek treatment for his ailment. Yet again though the counter argument for this is that he was destined to become depressed and that his choices to come are already written out for him. I make the choice every school day whether or not I should go and sit in on a class or go to the cafeteria; this choice can have a profound impact on the rest of the choices I make for that day. If I go to the Out Door Education I could be tired for the rest of the day, while if I sit around in the cafeteria I may become bored and lose interest for my following classes. I believe that all my choices though, are my own and that I was not written out like a computer program, forced into following the code with out choice of deviation. In the case of Oedipus I believe in fate because as a character of a play he has no choice, Sophocles determined his future. If we were to bring Oedipus into our reality and the events were to unfold as it was told in the play, then I would say that it was a tragic series of events that he and others made that brought him down that path. The case of John Anderton is different, because in his society there are people with the ability to see the future. When free will is involved there are infinite futures, but in John Anderton’s there is only one. Which means that his choices were determined by fate.

Favorite Movie

My favorite movie would have to be V for Vendetta, it's based off of Alan Moore's comic of the same name. The movie is set in a dark post apocalyptic England, where a totalitarian government has been put in place of the once democratic England. The reason why I would have to call this movie my favorite movie is because of the feeling and thought that it inspires in me. What I mean by that is that when I sit down to watch this movie I feel something, most movies I sit through I never feel anything anything at all. With V for Vendetta I am left with questions at the end, but also of a feeling of completeness. This is one of the rare cases when I prefer the movie rendition of the book than the book itself. I feel that the movie creates an atmosphere more captivating than book did, but the book answered more questions and took a bit more of the mystic out of V, the seemingly unstoppable force.
